A TORY COUNCILLOR has sparked anger after a racist tweet was sent from his account when Ireland failed to give the UK any points in the Eurovision.

Shortly after Nicky Byrne had told Europe that Ireland’s 12 points had gone to Belgium, Nick Harrington – a councillor for the Warwick area of Coventry  -tweeted: #Eurovision2017 thanks Ireland.  You can keep your f’king gypsies! Hard border coming folks!”

After receiving a backlash online, the tweet was deleted and then his social media account was no longer accessible.

Andrew Mobbs, leader of Warwick Council, confirmed that Harrington has been suspended. Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Mobbs said he was appalled by Harrington’s comments.

“I can confirm I have suspended him from the group. There will also be an investigation. I am appalled at the comments and there can be no justification for what happened. There is no defending such behaviour.”

It has also emerged that Surrey Police are investigating the matter.
